Join us to hear our former SD Civil War Roundtable President, Dave Tooley, discuss Civil War Railroads! We meet at the Mission Valley Library on Sunday, July 16th at 3:00 pm. America’s Civil War shooting began in December 1860 or thereabouts. The Union had a head-start by having the majority of railroad trackage in place by the 1830’s. Many changes had been made by the start of the War… the primary one being a standardized size in the width of the two rails… it turned out to be the smart move.
Railroads could be used in ALMOST all weather conditions. The men in charge of the United States Military Railroads (USMRR) were railroaders and knew what they needed while the Confederate States Military Railroad (CSMRR) had a much more difficult time using what they had.
