We are pleased to sponsor another free lecture to be given by Clay Hoffman on the subject of the Irish Brigade of the Civil War. The talk will take place at 3:00 p.m. on January 28th in the Mission Valley Branch Library, 2123 Fenton Parkway, San Diego, CA 92108 (next to IKEA). Everyone is welcome!
This renowned unit, consisting predominantly of Irish Americans who fought for the Union, were mostly recent immigrants. Often leading the charge, the Irish Brigade suffered one of the highest casualty rates of any Union brigade during the war. The Irishmen were known for their Gaelic war cry of “Faugh a ballaugh!” meaning “Clear the way!”
Clay Hoffman is a longtime member of the San Diego Civil War Round Table and has written dozens of articles on historical topics. His recent book is A Pearl of Uganda: The Story of Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital.
